Ranchi, November 04, 2024: Jharkhand is set for an intense electoral contest with a total of 1,211 candidates vying for 81 assembly seats, according to Jharkhand’s Chief Electoral Officer K Ravi Kumar. Among the contenders are 1,081 male candidates, 128 female candidates and notably, two transgender candidates, marking a diverse representation in the state elections. The polling process will be conducted in two phases, with extensive preparation underway.
Phase-Wise Election Breakdown
The first phase of voting, scheduled for November 13, will see a total of 683 candidates across 43 assembly constituencies. These include a significant number of male candidates along with 55 female candidates and one transgender candidate. The second phase, set for November 20, will cover 38 constituencies and include 528 candidates, among them 472 males, 55 females and one transgender individual. This phased approach is designed to ensure thorough organization and security, as well as a smooth voting experience for the electorate.
Voter Slip Distribution and Guidelines
To facilitate a seamless voting experience, the Election Commission has mobilized Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for the distribution of voter slips across the state. Voters are encouraged to carry their voter slips, which include crucial details like serial numbers and part numbers, to expedite their identification process at polling stations. According to the Chief Electoral Officer, carrying voter slips will help voters quickly locate their assigned booths and reduce the time spent in queues, ultimately aiding in a smoother polling process and faster voting turnaround.
Postal Ballot Process and Code of Conduct Enforcement
Additionally, the Election Commission has activated the postal ballot process for specific categories of voters, including government officials and service voters, to ensure that all eligible participants have the opportunity to exercise their franchise. Since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct in Jharkhand, enforcement authorities have seized over ₹143 crore in illicit cash, goods and materials across the state, underscoring the commitment to fair and transparent elections.
Women and Transgender Representation
While Jharkhand’s political landscape remains largely male-dominated, with 1,081 male candidates, the participation of 128 women reflects ongoing efforts to increase gender representation. However, this number highlights the gap in female participation in the state’s political sphere. The two transgender candidates add another layer to the representation, marking an important milestone in Jharkhand’s electoral history. These candidates signify a gradual but noteworthy shift towards inclusivity in the state’s politics.
Focus on Security and Smooth Polling Operations
Authorities have ensured that extensive security arrangements are in place, with the Election Commission coordinating efforts to maintain law and order during both phases of the election. Efforts to streamline the voting process through initiatives such as the voter slip distribution and postal ballot system aim to enhance the voting experience for Jharkhand’s electorate, ensuring that citizens can exercise their democratic rights efficiently and securely.
As Jharkhand prepares for the upcoming elections, the focus remains on a fair and inclusive process, with a broad spectrum of candidates and meticulous planning by election officials. The phased voting structure, coupled with strategic distribution of voter slips and enforcement of election guidelines, underscores the state’s commitment to a transparent election.
