Jharkhand Politics: JMM-Congress Alliance Finalizes 70 Seats, RJD and Left Secure 11 in Jharkhand

Ranchi, October 19, 2024: A significant political development took place in Jharkhand as the coalition partners under the INDIA Bloc have reached an agreement to contest the upcoming Assembly elections together.

The alliance, which comprises the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Left parties, will collectively field candidates across the state. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren officially announced this decision during a press conference on Friday, signaling a unified approach to the elections.

According to the seat-sharing arrangement, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress will field candidates on 70 seats, while the remaining 11 seats will be contested by the RJD and Left parties. This marks a strategic effort to consolidate opposition votes and present a robust challenge in the electoral contest.

“INDIA Bloc Will Contest Unitedly,” Says CM Hemant Soren

Chief Minister Hemant Soren emphasized that all four constituent parties under the INDIA Bloc will step into the electoral battlefield together.

He stated, “We have reached a consensus, and this alliance is stronger than ever. We are confident that this collaboration will lead to a formidable electoral performance.”

The finalization of the candidate lists for each party is expected to be announced soon, following consultations with RJD and Left party leaders.

Hemant Soren also highlighted that this year’s seat-sharing agreement stands in contrast to the 2019 elections, where there was no formal alliance with the Left parties. However, this time, the INDIA Bloc aims to project unity and strength by joining forces.

Senior Political Leaders Present During the Announcement

The announcement was made in the presence of senior political figures including Ghulam Ahmad Mir, the Jharkhand in-charge for Congress, Dr. Rameshwar Oraon, a state minister, and Vinod Pandey, General Secretary and spokesperson for the JMM.

JMM legislator Sudivya Kumar Sonu was also in attendance. Their collective presence underscored the seriousness and significance of the alliance for the upcoming polls.

Discussions with Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav on Seat Distribution

It is speculated that the final seat distribution under the INDIA Bloc will be discussed extensively when Chief Minister Soren meets with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav in Ranchi on Saturday. In the previous elections held in 2019, JMM contested on 43 seats, Congress on 31 seats and RJD fielded candidates in 7 constituencies. This time, the Left parties have been incorporated into the alliance, further broadening its political base.

NDA Announces Its Seat Sharing for the Upcoming Elections

While the INDIA Bloc has finalized its seat-sharing formula, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) also made its announcement on Friday.

According to the NDA’s agreement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 68 seats, while its alliance partners AJSU Party, Janata Dal United (JDU) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will contest 10, 2, and 1 seats, respectively.

Election Schedule Announced for Jharkhand

The Jharkhand Assembly elections will take place over two phases on November 13 and November 20, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 23.

Voters across the state will elect representatives for 81 Assembly constituencies, making this a critical election that could set the political landscape in Jharkhand for the coming years.
