Jamshedpur, August 30, 2026: Residents and commuters in Mango and surrounding areas could get relief from persistent traffic congestion soon, with the construction of the Mango Flyover, including the bridge over the Subarnarekha River, entering its final phase.
According to the project plan, the first section of the flyover is being prepared to open to vehicles before Durga Puja in October. The initial target had been to open the section in September, but heavy rainfall, flooding and some administrative and technical hurdles affected the construction schedule.
Gandhi Ghat to Dimna Road section to open first
According to the construction agency, vehicles approaching from the Gandhi Ghat side will be able to access the flyover and travel towards Dimna Road in the first phase.
Initially, this section is expected to function primarily as a one-way route.
Once opened, the section could reduce traffic pressure at Mango Chowk, where congestion frequently builds up because of vehicles travelling from Dimna Road, New Purulia Road and other surrounding areas.
The new route is expected to provide commuters with an alternative connection and potentially reduce travel time.
Vehicles coming from New Purulia Road and Dimna Road and seeking to enter the city through the flyover will have to wait until the remaining parts of the project are completed.
₹252 crore project being built on 57 pillars
The flyover project is being constructed at an estimated cost of around ₹252 crore and will stand on 57 pillars.
Construction of all the planned pillars over the Subarnarekha River has been completed.
Under the project design, the flyover will have four lanes towards Dimna Road and two lanes towards New Purulia Road.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to benefit thousands of people travelling daily between Mango, Dimna Road, Azadnagar, Purulia Road and surrounding areas.
Two major hurdles continue to affect construction
Construction on some sections continues to face two major obstacles.
The first concerns the transfer of Forest Department land in the Mango area. The pending process has affected construction towards New Purulia Road.
The second involves Tata Steel’s high-tension electricity tower and overhead wires near Workers’ College in front of Hathighoda Temple. The process of removing or relocating the tower and wires has not yet been completed.
Work continues round the clock where there are no obstacles
The construction agency says work is being carried out day and night on sections where there are no major obstructions.
If the first phase is opened within the planned timeframe, traffic pressure around Mango Chowk and Dimna Road could ease considerably during the Durga Puja period.
The October opening remains a project target, and the source material does not provide a specific date for commissioning the first section.
