Bokaro, September 28, 2025 A landslide occurred near Jhirki village in the Bermo subdivision of Bokaro district, Jharkhand, leaving residents narrowly escaping a potentially deadly situation. The incident created a large crater close to a coal mine in the Kathara police station area. Police, led by Station In-Charge Rajesh Prajapati, reached the site promptly to assess the situation.
Cause of the Landslide Near Jhirki Village

According to local residents, the coal mine near Jhirki village has had a long-standing underground fire. This subterranean fire has been burning the coal continuously, weakening the ground over time. As a result, the land collapsed, forming a large gaping hole. Several houses in the village had already developed cracks due to the underground fire, highlighting the structural risks posed to residents.
Rising Threat from Coal Mine Fires
The landslide near Jhirki village underscores the growing environmental and safety challenges in Bokaro’s coal mining regions. Underground fires and soil subsidence are ongoing concerns, posing risks to both property and human life. Villagers have long demanded relocation to safer areas, but no significant measures have been implemented so far.
Urgent Safety Concerns for Local Residents
The incident has heightened fears among the residents of Jhirki and surrounding areas. Authorities are urged to take immediate preventive action to mitigate the risk of further subsidence and ensure public safety. The event serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for government intervention in areas prone to environmental hazards caused by mining operations.
