Ghatshila, September 1, 2026: A crocodile was reportedly spotted swimming in the Subarnarekha River near Derang Ghat on Tuesday morning, triggering concern among local residents as the river’s water level continues to rise due to persistent rainfall.
According to villagers, the crocodile was seen in the river at around 8 am. The news quickly spread through the area, prompting a large number of people to gather along the riverbank to catch a glimpse of it.
Crocodile disappears into deep water
Villagers said that when people made noise from the riverbank, the crocodile was seen intermittently lifting its head above the water.
It eventually moved into deeper water and disappeared from view. Residents said the sighting was unusual for the area and created a mix of curiosity and fear among villagers.
Police inspect riverbank and issue warning
After receiving information about the sighting, Dhalbhumgarh police station in-charge Dheeraj Kumar Mishra reached Derang Ghat with police personnel.
The police inspected different river ghats and spoke to local residents about the reported sighting. The station in-charge advised people not to approach the riverbank and strictly warned them against attempting to disturb or interact with the crocodile.
Police also cautioned residents against gathering near the river simply to watch the animal, performing stunts or attempting to provoke it. Action may be taken against those who disregard the warning.
Alert issued in low-lying areas
With the Subarnarekha’s water level rising due to continuous rain, police have urged residents of low-lying areas to remain particularly cautious.
People have been advised to stay in safe areas and avoid unnecessary movement near the river.
The Forest Department has also been informed about the reported crocodile sighting so that necessary steps can be taken to monitor the animal and ensure safety in the area.
