Chaibasa, October 04, 2025: The hearing of the case against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, concerning his alleged objectionable remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, could not take place on Saturday at the MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa. The session was postponed as Judge Supriya Rani Tigga was on leave. The next hearing has been scheduled for October 9, 2025.
Rahul Gandhi Seeks Exemption from Personal Appearance
Rahul Gandhi filed an application under Section 205 seeking exemption from personal appearance during the trial. The court was expected to decide on this request on Saturday. Earlier, on September 22, 2025, arguments from both sides were completed, and the court reserved its order.
Gandhi was represented by advocates Subhash Chandra Mishra, Pranab Daripa, Mili Birua, and Saraswati Das. Present in the court premises were Congress District President Chandrashekhar Das and District Spokesperson Trishanu Rai.
Political and Public Interest in the Case
The case has drawn significant attention among Congress supporters and local political circles. The court’s decision on Rahul Gandhi’s exemption request is considered crucial.
If the court grants the exemption, Rahul Gandhi will be able to attend parliamentary and political engagements without any legal hindrance. Conversely, if the request is denied, he will be required to appear personally at all subsequent hearings.
Prosecution Argues Equal Treatment under Law
The prosecution, represented by advocate Keshav Prasad Mahto, stated that the law applies equally to everyone, and Rahul Gandhi, like any other defendant, should be present in court.
Background of the Case
The case originates from a 2018 speech delivered by Rahul Gandhi at a Congress event, where he allegedly made objectionable remarks against BJP leader Amit Shah. Following the remarks, BJP leader Pratap Katiyar filed a defamation case in the CJMs Court, Chaibasa, which was later transferred to the MP-MLA Special Court.
All eyes are now on October 9, 2025, when the court is expected to announce its decision on Rahul Gandhi’s request for exemption from personal appearance.
