Ranchi, August 31, 2026: Around 250 students of Classes 9 to 12 at PM Shri Kasturba Gandhi Balika Residential School in Sonahatu took part in a soil health programme aimed at building awareness about soil fertility, testing and sustainable farming practices.
The programme was jointly organised by the Ranchi district agriculture department, ATMA and Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra (RKM), Ranchi.
Students learn how to assess soil health
Agricultural scientist Dr Manoj Kumar Singh was the main speaker at the programme. He explained the importance of soil health and testing, along with the nutrients required for healthy plant growth.
The session covered major nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potash, as well as the role of micronutrients. Dr Singh also explained why soil pH and organic carbon are important indicators of soil condition and fertility.
Students were also given a practical demonstration of how to collect soil samples scientifically from a field and prepare them for submission to a laboratory for testing.
Focus on balanced nutrient use
The programme was conducted under the supervision of ATMA Ranchi. Sub-Project Director S.K. Jha, Block Technical Manager Pradeep Kumar and Dinanath Bhagat attended the event along with school warden Sarojni Toppo, teacher Shashi Bara and other members of the teaching staff.
The students actively participated in the session, asking questions about soil testing and related agricultural practices.
The programme focused on helping students understand balanced nutrient management and encouraging awareness of sustainable agricultural practices.
