Ranchi, September 06, 2026: Sudivya Kumar Sonu did not emerge in Jharkhand politics overnight. His rise was the result of almost three decades spent inside the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, beginning as a primary member and eventually taking him to the state Cabinet and two consecutive victories from Giridih.
His sudden death at the age of 56 has therefore created a particularly significant vacancy for the JMM. The party has lost not only a sitting MLA and minister but also a leader whose political career was deeply rooted in its organisation in Giridih.
Sonu’s journey began in 1989, when he joined the JMM as a primary member. Three years later, in 1992, he became the founding president of the party’s Giridih Nagar unit. Much of his early political career was spent working at the organisational and grassroots level.
That long association eventually translated into electoral contests.
Three elections before the breakthrough
Sonu first contested the Giridih Assembly seat in 2009 as a JMM candidate. He returned to the constituency in the 2014 election and finished second.
The decisive change came in 2019, when he finally won the Giridih seat. The victory transformed him from a long-serving party organiser into one of the JMM’s important political faces in the district.
Five years later, Sonu retained the seat in the 2024 Assembly election, securing a second consecutive term as an MLA.
His electoral record was consequently built after years of organisational work and repeated attempts to establish himself in Giridih politics.
From Giridih MLA to a minister with multiple portfolios
Following his 2024 victory, Sonu joined the Hemant Soren government and was entrusted with several departments.
His responsibilities included Higher and Technical Education, Urban Development and Housing, Tourism, Art and Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs.
The combination of portfolios put him in charge of areas ranging from higher education and urban administration to tourism and youth-related affairs.
His higher education responsibilities also brought him into the middle of some of Jharkhand’s most contentious student issues.
He became part of the government’s response to student unrest
The JPSC and JSSC controversies placed considerable pressure on the state government, with students raising questions over examination systems, alleged irregularities and recruitment processes.
Sonu became one of the ministers involved in maintaining dialogue with student representatives. During the student movement in August 2026, he took part in several rounds of discussions with student delegations and was included in the ministerial group constituted by the government.
The talks dealt with examination reforms, investigations into disputed examinations and other demands raised by students.
His involvement was significant because his portfolio directly connected him with the higher education system and the concerns of students preparing for competitive examinations.
A political link between the organisation and government
Sonu’s long experience within the JMM organisation was another important part of his political profile.
He was regarded as being close to Chief Minister Hemant Soren and was considered one of the leaders trusted by the party leadership. His years in grassroots politics also gave him an organisational role beyond his work inside the government.
That combination, party organisation on one side and ministerial responsibilities on the other became a defining feature of his later political career.
JMM loses an experienced organisational leader
The JMM described Sonu’s death as an “irreparable loss” to the party, the government and Jharkhand. In its tribute, the party recalled his years of political struggle and organisational contribution and ended its message with “Antim Johar.”
For the party, the loss comes at a time when Sonu had already established himself electorally in Giridih and had become part of the state government’s senior political leadership.
Another loss for the Hemant Soren government
Sonu’s death is also the latest in a series of deaths of ministers during the tenure of the Hemant Soren government.
Before him, ministers Haji Hussain Ansari, Jagarnath Mahto and Ramdas Soren had also died during their respective terms in office.
But Sonu’s political story was distinct in one important respect, he spent most of his career building his position from within the party organisation.
From joining the JMM in 1989 to becoming the founding president of its Giridih Nagar unit, contesting elections in 2009 and 2014, winning in 2019 and 2024, and eventually entering the Cabinet, his career stretched across nearly three decades.
For the JMM, his death means the loss of a two-time Giridih MLA, Cabinet minister and long-serving party organiser whose political identity had been built over years of work on the ground.
