Giridih, September 06, 2026: Jharkhand Cabinet Minister and Giridih MLA Sudivya Kumar Sonu died after suffering a cardiac arrest at Mercy Hospital in Giridih in the early hours of Sunday, sending shockwaves through the state’s political circles. He was 56.
Sonu reportedly fell seriously ill late Saturday night and was taken to the hospital after his condition deteriorated. Despite efforts by doctors, he could not be revived. His death was subsequently confirmed by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which expressed deep grief over the loss of its senior leader.
The news triggered an outpouring of grief in Giridih, with party workers, supporters and well-wishers gathering at the hospital. Chief Minister Hemant Soren also expressed grief over Sonu’s death, describing the loss as a deeply personal one.
Two-time MLA from Giridih
Sonu represented the Giridih Sadar Assembly constituency and was elected to the Jharkhand Assembly for the first time in 2019. He retained the seat in the 2024 Assembly election, winning a second consecutive term.
A senior JMM leader, Sonu held an important position in the Hemant Soren government and was involved in several key areas of state administration.
Held several important portfolios
At the time of his death, Sonu was handling major portfolios including Higher and Technical Education, Urban Development and Housing, Tourism, Art and Culture, and Sports and Youth Affairs.
His sudden death has left a significant void in the JMM organisation and the state government. Party leaders and supporters have paid tribute to the leader, recalling his political work and contribution to Jharkhand.
The JMM said Sonu’s untimely death was an irreparable loss to the party and the state.
