Jamshedpur, September 5, 2026: A three-year-old boy who went missing from Seva Ashram in Carriage Colony under the jurisdiction of Barmamines police station was traced and safely recovered within around six hours, Jamshedpur Police said. A 42-year-old man was arrested on allegations of taking the child towards West Bengal.
The child, identified as Aryan Mahanand, was recovered near Kharagpur railway station with assistance from the West Bengal Police. The arrested man has been identified as Aslam Khan, a resident of Carriage Colony.
Police launch immediate search
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Sumit Kumar, Aryan, son of Sameer Mahanand, went missing from Seva Ashram at around 3 pm on September 4.
After relatives were unable to locate him despite searching the area, information was given to Barmamines police station. Acting on a complaint filed by Kunti Mahanand, police registered a case and immediately began investigating.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Ehtesham Waqarib directed the formation of a special team to trace the child. Investigators used technical inputs to identify clues about the child’s whereabouts.
The investigation indicated that the child had been taken towards West Bengal. Jamshedpur Police subsequently coordinated with their West Bengal counterparts and began searching possible locations.
Child found near Kharagpur railway station
The police team eventually traced Aryan near Kharagpur railway station and reached the location without delay. The child was safely recovered and Aslam Khan was arrested from the spot, police said.
According to police, the accused admitted during questioning to taking the child with him.
Investigators have also found information about Khan’s alleged previous criminal history. Police said he was reportedly attempting to take the child to Mumbai.
Police examine possible wider links
Investigators are now trying to establish why the child was allegedly being taken outside the state and whether anyone else was involved.
Police are also examining the possibility of a connection with a wider child trafficking network, including whether the child was allegedly being taken outside the state for sale. This remains an investigative line of inquiry and has not been established as fact. The investigation is continuing.
