Ranchi, September 06, 2026: The Jharkhand government has declared two days of state mourning on September 6 and 7 following the death of minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu, who passed away at a hospital in Giridih on Sunday morning.
The decision was communicated through an order issued by the Cabinet Secretariat and Vigilance Department on Sunday.
During the mourning period, the national flag will fly at half-mast on all government buildings where it is routinely hoisted. The government has also directed that no official state functions be organised during the two-day mourning period.
Government offices to remain closed on September 7
As a mark of respect to the deceased minister, the state government has decided to keep all state government offices closed on Monday, September 7.
The Personnel, Administrative Reforms and Rajbhasha Department has been directed to issue a separate order regarding the closure.
The Cabinet Secretariat and Vigilance Department order, issued by Special Officer Akhilesh Kumar Sinha, stated that Sudivya Kumar Sonu died on the morning of September 6 at Mercy Hospital in Giridih.
Information sent to senior officials across the state
The decision on state mourning and the closure of government offices has been communicated to the offices of the Governor and Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary’s office, Development Commissioner, Board of Revenue, Information and Public Relations Department and senior administrative and police officials.
The communication has also been sent to all Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Secretaries, Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and police authorities across Jharkhand.
Sonu was serving as minister for Urban Development and Housing, Higher and Technical Education, Tourism, Art and Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs. His death has prompted mourning across the political and administrative establishment of the state.
