Jamshedpur, September 6, 2026: A seminar planned to honour teachers and discuss challenges in education turned into a condolence meeting in Jamshedpur on Sunday following the death of Jharkhand minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu.
The event, titled ‘Teachers’ Respect, Advancement of Education’, was organised jointly by the Swarnarekha Area Development Trust and Nature Foundation at the Michael John Auditorium. Hundreds of teachers, headmasters and principals attending the programme paid tribute to the late minister.
Saryu Roy recalls political association with Sonu
Jamshedpur West MLA and programme convenor Saryu Roy said the event was originally intended to focus on issues facing education and recognise the contribution of teachers. However, following Sonu’s death, the organisers decided to convert it into a condolence meeting.
Recalling his association with Sonu, Roy described the late minister as an active, talented, articulate and dependable politician. He said they had political differences but never developed personal differences.
Rai also spoke about the personal affection and cordial relationship they shared despite a considerable age gap. He became emotional while paying tribute to Sonu.
Educationists remember Sonu’s contribution
Ranchi University Vice-Chancellor Prof Saroj Sharma said carrying forward the work initiated by Sonu would be a meaningful tribute to him.
Prabhakar Singh, Chancellor of Sona Devi University, described Sonu as a minister who worked with a mission, vision and determination. He said Sonu could have brought significant changes to higher education had he been given more time.
Jharkhand University of Technology Vice-Chancellor Dr D.K. Singh said he initially found it difficult to believe the news of Sonu’s death and was deeply shocked after it was confirmed.
Vinoba Bhave University Vice-Chancellor Prof Chandrabhushan Sharma remembered Sonu as a strong leader with clear views and an effective orator.
Anshul Sharan, president of Yugantar Bharati, described Sonu as a hardworking minister as well as a good human being, calling his death deeply painful.
Two-minute silence held
The gathering observed a two-minute silence in memory of the late minister. Participants also offered flowers at his portrait as a mark of respect.
Dr Mudita Chandra conducted the programme, while Dr Ragini Bhushan presented the devotional song Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye.
Rai said the new date for the education-focused seminar would be announced later.
