Jamtara Police Arrest Two Cybercriminals in E-Commerce Scam
Jamtara, January 03, 2025: In a major breakthrough, the Jamtara police have successfully arrested two members of a cybercrime gang involved in scamming individuals by posing as customer care representatives of e-commerce companies. The arrests were made following a tip-off to the police, leading to the capture of the suspects, identified as Tahir Ansari and Mujahid Ansari. Both criminals were apprehended in the rural areas of Jamtara, including the villages of Nawadih and Sundarjori in the Karmatanr police station jurisdiction.
Seized Items Reveal Cybercrime Operation
The police recovered a significant amount of evidence during the operation, including 16 mobile phones, 28 SIM cards and a laptop. These items were part of the equipment used by the gang to execute their fraudulent activities. According to the police, the gang’s operations were widespread, with victims targeted across several states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha.
Modus Operandi of E-Commerce Scam Unveiled
The gang’s modus operandi involved posing as customer service representatives of popular e-commerce companies. They would contact unsuspecting individuals, often from rural areas, using phone calls. The criminals would convince victims that they needed to share their mobile screens using screen-sharing apps such as AnyDesk and Quick Support. Once the victims granted access, the fraudsters would siphon off money from their accounts or steal personal information.
This type of scam, commonly referred to as screen-sharing fraud, has become increasingly prevalent in India, with cybercriminals exploiting the trust people place in well-known e-commerce brands. The criminals used the victims’ mobile devices to gain unauthorized access to their financial data, resulting in significant financial losses.
Jamtara Police Crack Down on Cybercrime Gangs
The Jamtara district, often referred to as the “cybercrime capital of India,” has been the center of many such operations. The police department, under the leadership of Jamtara Police Superintendent Dr. Ehtesham Waquarib, has been intensifying its efforts to curb cybercrime in the region. DSP Chandrashekhar, in a media briefing, confirmed that the operation was a part of the police’s ongoing crackdown on cybercrime gangs operating across Jharkhand and neighboring states.
The police’s investigation has revealed that the gang targeted not only individuals but also vulnerable groups who were unfamiliar with digital fraud tactics. The criminals took advantage of the growing dependence on e-commerce platforms, especially during the pandemic, when online shopping surged.
Cybercrime Investigation Updates
The police have assured the public that the investigation is ongoing, with further arrests expected as the team continues to trace the connections of the arrested suspects. The authorities have urged citizens to be cautious when sharing personal information over the phone and to avoid using screen-sharing apps unless they are absolutely certain of the identity of the person on the other end.
Preventive Measures Against E-Commerce Fraud
Authorities are also working on raising awareness about the risks of such scams. They have advised people to be wary of unsolicited calls claiming to be from e-commerce customer service teams and to avoid sharing sensitive information, such as passwords or bank details, over the phone. The police have also urged citizens to report any suspicious activity promptly to prevent further financial losses.
As part of the ongoing effort to tackle cybercrime in the region, Jamtara police are collaborating with state and national cybercrime units to implement more robust systems to detect and dismantle such gangs.
A Step Toward Safer Digital Transactions
The recent arrests highlight the growing issue of e-commerce fraud in India and the need for enhanced vigilance from both authorities and consumers. As digital transactions continue to rise, it is crucial for individuals to remain cautious and informed about the methods used by cybercriminals. The Jamtara police’s swift action serves as a reminder that cybercrime can be fought effectively with coordinated efforts from law enforcement agencies and the public.
