Jharkhand Tiger Alert News: Suspected Tiger Movement in Khunti’s Tarup Jungle Raises Concerns
Khunti (Jharkhand), May 04, 2025: A potential tiger presence in the dense forests of Khunti district has put the Jharkhand Forest Department on high alert. In the Tarup forest region under the jurisdiction of Maranghada Police Station, officials discovered large animal pugmarks resembling those of a tiger, along with the skeletal remains of two cattle, raising serious concerns of a predator’s presence in the area.
Tiger Pugmarks Found in Khunti Forest, Investigation Underway
Following local reports, forest officials reached the Tarup jungle where clear pugmarks were found near cattle kill sites. The size, pattern and stride of the tracks closely resemble those of a tiger, prompting the department to initiate a thorough investigation. Experts were called in to examine photographic evidence and on-ground samples of the footprints.
Initial analysis indicates a strong possibility that the pugmarks belong to a tiger. However, the department has yet to confirm the species definitively and is proceeding with caution.
Cattle Carcasses Suggest Possible Tiger Attack in Jharkhand
Two oxen were found dead within a close radius of the pugmark sightings. The condition of the carcasses suggests they were attacked and fed upon by a large carnivore. The nature of the wounds and partially consumed remains are consistent with tiger predation behavior, although forest officials are also considering the possibility of a hyena or leopard attack.
According to experts involved in the analysis, the bite marks and bone fractures are under close review to rule out other predators commonly found in the region.
Forest Department on High Alert Amid Khunti Tiger Sighting Fears
Surendra Kumar Singh, the Forest Range Officer of the area, confirmed that surveillance has been intensified following the discovery. “The footprints do indicate tiger movement, but we are also examining the possibility of a hyena based on the way the cattle were scavenged,” he stated.
To prevent panic and ensure safety, patrol teams have been deployed in and around the forest. Villagers have been advised to avoid venturing into the jungle alone, especially during early mornings and late evenings.
Camera Traps and Ground Teams Deployed for Monitoring
In response to the escalating concern, the Jharkhand Forest Department has started preparations for installing camera traps to confirm the presence and species of the predator. Ground teams have been instructed to keep a round-the-clock watch, while expert trackers assess other signs such as scratch marks on trees, scat samples, and vocal calls.
The department has also reached out to wildlife experts from Ranchi and Betla National Park for additional support in identifying and managing the situation.
Possible Tiger Corridor Activity in Khunti Region
Officials noted that Khunti lies in proximity to wildlife corridors that connect various forest ranges in Jharkhand. Occasionally, tigers from Palamau or Odisha have been reported to wander into unfamiliar territories, particularly during the mating season or due to shrinking habitat.
While tiger sightings are rare in Khunti, the current findings have raised the possibility of transient movement or territory exploration by a solitary tiger.
Locals Concerned, Authorities Urge Caution and Cooperation
Residents of nearby villages have expressed concern after the discovery of the dead cattle and paw marks. Forest authorities have begun sensitization campaigns to inform the public about precautionary measures, including securing livestock during the night and reporting any unusual wildlife activity immediately.
The department has assured that no immediate threat to human life has been detected but emphasized the need for community cooperation in monitoring efforts.
