Ranchi, October 11, 2025, (J.H.): The Jharkhand government has initiated a major infrastructure overhaul in the state capital, Ranchi. Under the directive of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, three major bus terminals – ITI Bus Stand, Government Bus Depot, and Birsa Munda Bus Terminal will be completely modernized with airport-like amenities.
The project, led by the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUIDCO), has received administrative approval of ₹48.72 crore from Urban Development Minister Sudeep Kumar. Construction is expected to begin soon, marking a significant step toward upgrading public transport facilities in Ranchi.
ITI Bus Stand to Become a Model Terminal

The ITI Bus Stand, spread over three acres, will be transformed into a state-of-the-art model terminal. The proposed terminal building will cover 2,330 sq. meters on the ground floor and 880 sq. meters on the first floor, featuring several modern passenger facilities.
Amenities will include waiting halls, restrooms, restaurants, ticket counters, dormitories, drinking water facilities, staircases, elevators, and separate maintenance sheds for buses. A driver’s canteen and dual sliding entry gates will also be added to ensure smooth traffic flow. Once completed, the terminal will have the capacity to handle 416 buses daily.
The project aims to improve passenger convenience while enhancing traffic management in one of Ranchi’s busiest transport hubs.
Government Bus Depot to Be Completely Rebuilt
Built in the 1960s, the Government Bus Depot will see a complete transformation. The existing structure will be replaced with a modern, high-capacity terminal, covering 1,771 sq. meters on the ground floor and 845 sq. meters on the first floor.
The redesigned facility will feature eight bus bays, allowing the operation of 512 buses daily. Passengers will benefit from air-conditioned waiting lounges, food kiosks, restaurants, ticket counters, and dedicated parking areas.
This redevelopment is part of Ranchi’s broader urban modernization plan, ensuring efficient public transportation aligned with national infrastructure standards.
Birsa Munda Bus Terminal to Get Major Facelift
The Birsa Munda Bus Terminal at Khadgarha, covering 11.6 acres, will undergo extensive renovation while retaining its existing structure. The revamp project, costing ₹3.76 crore, will introduce 31 smart bus bays with sheds, parking for 89 buses and 70 cars, a 50-bed dormitory, and a modern administrative block.
Additional facilities will include showers, high-mast lighting, enhanced security via CCTV, and an attractive main entrance gate. The renovation aims to make the terminal safer, greener, and more passenger-friendly, bringing it on par with modern urban transport infrastructure seen in metropolitan cities.
