Ranchi Leads Liquor Sales, Jamtara Records the Lowest
Ranchi, January 02, 2024: The New Year celebrations in Jharkhand witnessed a staggering ₹60 crore worth of liquor sales over three days, from December 30 to January 1. According to provisional data from the state excise department, the highest sales were recorded in Ranchi, while Jamtara accounted for the lowest.
Breakdown of Liquor Sales Across Jharkhand
The state’s liquor sales surged during the festive period, with December 31 emerging as the busiest day. On this day alone, liquor worth ₹27.52 crore was sold. December 30 saw sales amounting to ₹14.58 crore and January 1 added another ₹18–₹19 crore to the total.
Compared to the previous year, this year’s December 31 sales surpassed the ₹24 crore mark of 2023, reaching nearly ₹3.5 crore more.
Ranchi Tops the Charts with Record Sales
Ranchi led the liquor sales, breaking its previous record of ₹4.62 crore in a single day. On December 31, the district recorded sales of ₹5.10 crore, while January 1 saw another ₹3 crore worth of liquor sold. Combined, Ranchi contributed over ₹8 crore during the two peak days of celebrations.
Districts such as East Singhbhum, Hazaribagh and Saraikela followed Ranchi in liquor consumption, with each reporting sales exceeding ₹2 crore on December 31.
Jamtara Reports the Lowest Liquor Sales
On the other end of the spectrum, Jamtara recorded the lowest liquor sales in the state. The district reported sales of ₹19.65 lakh, highlighting a significant disparity in consumption patterns across Jharkhand.
Other districts, including Bokaro, Deoghar, Giridih, Palamu and Ramgarh, also reported relatively moderate sales, each surpassing ₹1 crore on December 31.
Comparative Analysis of Festive Liquor Trends
The spike in liquor sales during New Year’s celebrations is not unique to Jharkhand but reflects a nationwide trend. However, the ₹60 crore figure is significant, showcasing the growing demand for liquor during festive seasons in the state.
Ranchi’s dominance in sales underscores its status as a major urban center with a higher disposable income and population density. Meanwhile, Jamtara’s low sales may reflect differing cultural or economic factors influencing consumption patterns.
Excise Department’s Monitoring and Revenue Impact
The excise department is yet to release official figures but has acknowledged the provisional data, which indicates a notable increase in revenue. The department’s estimates align with the observed trends and officials expect the final numbers to confirm the ₹60 crore milestone.
This surge in sales contributes significantly to the state’s revenue, with excise taxes forming a substantial portion of the government’s income. The festive period often provides a critical boost to the state’s fiscal health.
Key Takeaways
This data underscores the economic and cultural dynamics influencing liquor consumption patterns in Jharkhand, offering insights into regional trends and their impact on state revenue.
