Dhanbad, October 11, 2025 (J.H.): A massive fire broke out on Saturday morning at the centuries-old Maa Mangal Chandi Temple, located near the Jharia Char Number Taxi Stand in Dhanbad district, Jharkhand. The sudden blaze caused chaos among devotees and locals, who immediately gathered to help control the fire.
Fire at Centuries-Old Mangal Chandi Temple in Dhanbad Causes Panic
According to eyewitnesses, thick smoke was seen rising from the temple premises early in the morning, creating panic in the area. Locals quickly alerted the police and fire brigade, while several people joined hands to extinguish the flames before the arrival of firefighters. Their prompt action helped prevent a larger disaster.
Temple Priest Reports Fire Spread Through Adjacent Office
Temple priest informed that the fire is suspected to have started in a nearby office of the Puja Committee, which had a large stock of cloth materials. The flames likely spread to the temple through a ventilation passage. The Jharia police reached the scene immediately after receiving the alert and coordinated efforts with the local administration.
Severe Damage to Shrines of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva
The blaze caused extensive damage to the shrines of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva located within the temple complex. Tiles, electrical wiring, fans, bulbs, and several sacred idols were damaged in the fire. Initial estimates suggest a loss of nearly ₹2–3 lakh, according to the temple priest.
Local Efforts Prevented Major Disaster
By the time the fire brigade arrived, local residents and members of the temple committee had already brought the fire under control using water and sand. Their timely response saved the centuries-old temple from total destruction.
Damage Reported in Nearby Durga Bhawan
The fire also affected an adjoining Durga Bhawan room, where decorative materials such as tarpaulins, bamboo poles, and fabric items were stored by local decorators. These items were completely gutted. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and authorities are investigating the incident.
