Jamshedpur, December 23, 2024: In a significant move to curb tobacco sales near educational institutions, the administration in Jamshedpur has launched a crackdown on shops selling tobacco products within 100 yards of schools. Under the direction of District Commissioner Ananya Mittal, a raid was conducted in several areas, leading to fines and the confiscation of tobacco items.
Tobacco Products Seized in Jamshedpur’s School Vicinity
The raid, led by Dhalbhum SDO Shatabdi Majumdar, targeted shops in the Sitaramdera, Bhalubasa and Baradwari areas. These locations, which are in close proximity to schools such as Harijan School in Bhalubasa, Adivasi School in Sitaramdera and People’s Academy in Baradwari, have been under scrutiny for illegal tobacco sales. During the operation, tobacco products were seized from three shops and the owners were fined ₹600 each for violating the law.
Strict Action Against Tobacco Sale Near Schools
The raid was conducted by a team that included Executive Magistrate Sudipto Raj, Food Safety Officer Manzar Hussain and other officials. SDO Shatabdi Majumdar emphasized that the administration is closely monitoring the sale of tobacco, cigarettes and pan masala near schools. She warned that any shop found selling tobacco products again would face strict legal action.
Future Plans for Continuous Monitoring
The seized tobacco products will be destroyed following the preparation of a seizure list. SDO Majumdar confirmed that such raids and inspections would continue to ensure that shops comply with regulations prohibiting the sale of tobacco near educational institutions. The local administration is committed to maintaining a tobacco-free environment for students.
