Ranchi, September 23, 2025: The metro rail initiative in Jharkhand’s three major cities, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad has received renewed focus from the central government. Officials have requested the state government to prepare an updated Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for these cities, reflecting current urban transport needs. Following this, Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed the Department of Urban Development and Housing to expedite the preparation of the new CMP. The department has already issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to facilitate the process.
Central Government’s Support for Jharkhand Metro Project
On July 10, during the Eastern Regional Council meeting, Chief Minister Hemant Soren raised the demand for a metro rail in Ranchi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Subsequently, the Urban Development Department submitted an earlier version of the CMP to the central government. However, officials found it insufficient in addressing contemporary urban transportation challenges. According to Principal Secretary Sunil Kumar, the updated CMP will be submitted within one and a half to two months, after which the state expects faster approvals and smoother procedural clearances for the metro project.
Understanding CMP and Its Role in Metro Planning
A Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) serves as the foundational blueprint for large-scale public transport projects. The CMP analyzes current and projected traffic patterns, road network efficiency, traffic congestion, availability of public transportation, rising private vehicle use, pollution, and environmental impact. Based on the CMP, decisions are made regarding metro routes, project feasibility, and economic sustainability.
Metro Rail: Benefits for Urban Commute and Environment
Experts highlight that metro rail provides a fast, safe, and reliable urban commuting option. It significantly reduces travel time, accommodates hundreds of passengers per trip, and helps relieve road traffic congestion. Additionally, metro systems are considered environmentally friendly compared to conventional road transport, supporting sustainable urban development.
State Government Optimism for Metro Implementation
The Department of Urban Development believes that Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s initiative, combined with the state government’s proactive approach, will accelerate the metro rail project in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad. With the updated CMP in place, concrete steps toward implementation are expected in the near future, moving Jharkhand closer to a modernized urban transport network.
