Ranchi, December 12, 2024: The fourth and final day of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly session witnessed intense political activity as issues of sand shortage and the cancellation of the CGL examination took center stage. The opposition, led by BJP MLAs, held demonstrations in the Assembly premises, alleging government inaction and demanding immediate intervention.
Protests Against Sand Shortage and Price Surge
BJP MLA Kushwaha Shashi Bhushan Mehta staged a sit-in to protest the skyrocketing prices and alleged black marketing of sand in the state. Citing examples from Palamu district, he highlighted how sand prices had surged alarmingly within a week, impacting local residents and construction activities. Kushwaha Shashi Bhushan Mehta urged Chief Minister Hemant Soren to intervene promptly, warning of further disruptions if the issue persists.
All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) MLA Nirmal Mahato echoed similar concerns, advocating for making sand freely accessible to prevent black marketing. Mahato emphasized the need to regulate per-tractor levies imposed on sand transport, which he claimed had burdened common people.
CGL Exam Controversy and Police Action
The opposition also condemned the handling of protests by candidates of the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination. Former BJP MLA Amit Yadav criticized the government for alleged lathi charges on demonstrators demanding transparency and fairness in the recruitment process. Accusing the state of reneging on promises of employment, Yadav stated, “Instead of jobs, our youth are being met with batons.”
BJP MLA Raj Sinha expressed disappointment over the governor’s address, claiming it overlooked critical issues such as unemployment and the sand crisis. “The government’s indifference to these pressing concerns paints a grim picture of governance,” he added.
Government’s Response to Accusations
Responding to the opposition’s allegations, ruling party representatives defended their stance. JMM MLA Amit Mahato asserted that the government remains committed to development and ensuring fairness in recruitment processes. “We are addressing concerns systematically and taking measures for sustained progress,” he said.
Minister Sudivya Kumar, speaking on the CGL issue, stressed the importance of lawful protests. He pointed out that while freedom of expression is fundamental, any disruptions to public order would be dealt with as per legal provisions.
Public Frustration Over Governance
The political turmoil reflects broader public frustration over governance and essential services. The sand shortage, attributed to alleged corruption and regulatory hurdles, has significantly affected construction activities and livelihoods across the state. Meanwhile, controversies surrounding recruitment exams have added to the perception of administrative inefficiency.
As debates and protests continue, all eyes are on the government’s next steps in addressing these grievances. The outcome will likely shape public opinion ahead of upcoming political milestones in Jharkhand.
