Godda December 18, 2024: In a shocking incident, a Circle Officer (CO) was held hostage for three hours by sand mafias during a raid on illegal sand mining operations near Dhamni in the Sunderpahari police station area. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, has raised serious concerns about the growing influence of illegal sand mining in the region.

CO Prakash Besra Targeted During Raid

The CO, identified as Prakash Besra, was conducting a raid against illegal sand mining when the situation turned hostile. According to reports, the officer and his team seized four sand-laden tractors from the site. However, chaos erupted as members of the sand mafia arrived in large numbers, creating a tense standoff.

The sand mafia allegedly overpowered the officials, freeing the seized vehicles and holding the CO hostage. The situation persisted for three hours until police reinforcements arrived at the scene and secured the officer’s release.

FIR Filed Against Accused

Following the incident, an FIR was lodged at Sunderpahari police station. The complaint names six individuals and includes 40 unidentified persons for charges such as obstructing government work, assault and endangering the safety of a public servant.

Police officials have assured strict action against those involved, stating that the incident highlights the urgent need to curb illegal sand mining in the area.

Villagers Allege Collusion

While the raid aimed to address illegal sand mining, local villagers have raised questions about its effectiveness. Some residents alleged that the seized tractors were deliberately released, hinting at possible collusion between officials and the sand mafia.
