Ranchi, October 27, 2024: The Tribal Coordination Committee has raised strong objections against the election candidacy of tribal women who are married to non-tribal men, labeling it as a “conspiracy” against the rights of the tribal community. The committee leaders argued that this practice undermines the constitutional rights and privileges reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Tribal Leaders Advocate for True Representation

Laxminarayan Munda, the convener of the Tribal Coordination Committee and W. Munda, president of the Kanke Road Sarna Committee, have emphasized the need to reserve all 28 ST-designated seats in the Jharkhand Assembly exclusively for genuine tribal candidates. They released a joint press statement asserting that tribal representation should not be compromised by candidates whose affiliations are deemed inconsistent with tribal identity.

Previous Instances Spark Outrage

According to W. Munda, instances in previous elections have stirred discontent within the tribal community. He cited an example from the Khunti Assembly constituency, where the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) initially nominated a non-tribal candidate, which was later changed following widespread protests. Similarly, in the Khijri constituency, Sarita Tirkey, married to non-tribal Jaleshwar Mahato, was given a ticket by the Jharkhand Democratic Revolutionary Front, sparking further controversy.

Call for Action to Protect Tribal Rights

The Tribal Coordination Committee is urging state and central authorities to address this issue and ensure stricter enforcement of rules governing ST reservation criteria. Laxminarayan Munda stated that the practice of fielding tribal women married to non-tribal men is a deliberate strategy that could erode the rightful representation of tribals in legislative bodies. He emphasized that such acts are not limited to Assembly elections but have also been observed in panchayat polls.

Demand for Official Intervention

W. Munda called upon the Election Commission, state government, and constitutional bodies to take concrete steps in preventing the misuse of ST-reserved seats. He stressed that the matter is not merely about individual candidates but reflects a larger issue concerning the constitutional rights of tribal communities. The committee’s stance is clear, electoral candidacy on ST-reserved seats must be aligned with the genuine tribal status to preserve the integrity of tribal representation.

The Tribal Coordination Committee’s statement marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the representation of tribal communities, urging authorities to uphold the principles of constitutional rights and prevent any dilution of tribal identity in political processes.
