Ranchi/Palamu, September 30, 2025: A stolen elephant valued at ₹1 crore from Palamu, Jharkhand, has been recovered in Amnour village, Chapra district, Bihar. The pachyderm, named Jaymati, was reportedly sold for ₹27 lakh to local resident Gorakh Singh.
Elephant Theft Reported by Owner in Palamu
The case came to light after Narendra Kumar Shukla, a resident of Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, filed a complaint with the Medininagar Sadar Police Station in Palamu on September 12. Shukla stated that the elephant, Jaymati, was fitted with a tracking chip, which helped authorities trace her location.
Police Rescue Operation in Bihar
During the investigation, police received a confidential tip that the elephant had been sold in Chapra, Bihar. A coordinated operation involving Palamu police and the Bihar Forest Department successfully rescued Jaymati from Amnour.
Investigation Reveals Unauthorized Sale
Police investigations revealed that Narendra Kumar Shukla originally purchased Jaymati along with three partners for ₹40 lakh. However, the three partners sold the elephant for ₹27 lakh without Shukla’s consent. The mahavat (elephant handler) was also reportedly involved in the transaction.
Palamu Police Continue Investigation
Palamu Sadar Station In-Charge Lalji stated that significant leads have emerged during the probe and further investigations are ongoing to trace all parties involved in the elephant theft and illegal sale.
