Ranchi, November 05, 2024: In a significant announcement, Chief Electoral Officer K. Ravi Kumar emphasized that a voter slip is not a valid voter identification document. During a press conference at the Election House on Tuesday, he clarified that many voters mistakenly believe the voter slip serves as a voter ID, leading to confusion at polling stations.
Importance of Voter Identification
K. Ravi Kumar stated that the India Election Commission recognizes 12 specific types of identification proof that are acceptable for voting. These documents must be presented at the polling booths, as the voter slip alone does not fulfill the identification requirements. The Chief Electoral Officer’s remarks aim to educate voters ahead of the upcoming elections and ensure a smooth voting process.
Distribution of Voter Slips
The distribution of voter slips is currently underway and will continue until November 8. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are visiting homes to deliver these slips. This year, the voter slips include marked serial numbers and part numbers, designed to help voters easily locate their names on the electoral rolls. By noting these details, voters can efficiently navigate the polling process, saving time and reducing congestion at voting centers.
Measures Against Election Malpractices
Responding to questions about election integrity, K. Ravi Kumar confirmed that no directives have been issued to separate JSPLS personnel from election duties. However, he noted that the Election Commission has implemented a standing order in several states to prevent NGOs and self-help groups from participating in election activities after receiving complaints. This measure aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
Since the enforcement of the model code of conduct, authorities have seized illegal materials and cash worth ₹151.56 crores. Continuous monitoring by various agencies is in place to ensure that the upcoming assembly elections are conducted fairly, transparently, and without intimidation.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s insights serve as a reminder for voters to verify their identification documents before heading to the polls. Ensuring proper documentation will help facilitate a seamless voting experience for all participants.
