Ranchi, September 2, 2026: Ranchi Municipal Corporation is preparing to establish a 50-kennel Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre in Bargain, in the Bariatu area, as part of efforts to manage the city’s stray dog population and address concerns related to dog-bite incidents.

The proposed facility will come up in Ward No. 4, with the process of selecting an agency for its construction already underway.

Centre to focus on sterilisation, treatment and vaccination

The facility is being planned to provide a structured system for managing stray dogs. It will include arrangements for sterilisation, treatment and care of animals brought to the centre.

Sterilisation and vaccination are intended to help control the stray dog population while supporting measures to address rabies and dog-bite concerns.

The proposed centre is expected to strengthen Ranchi’s infrastructure for implementing the Animal Birth Control programme.

Centre planned amid focus on stray dog management

The move comes amid increased emphasis on developing infrastructure for scientific management of stray dogs.

The source material refers to recent directions from the Supreme Court to states and Union Territories regarding the development of necessary infrastructure for animal birth control and the establishment of at least one fully functional ABC centre in every district.

The state government has also directed concerned departments and district administrations to take action in accordance with the applicable Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for stray dog management and effective implementation of the Animal Birth Control programme.

Against this backdrop, the proposed facility in Bargain is being viewed as an important addition to Ranchi’s animal-control infrastructure.

Agency selection process underway

With the agency selection process now underway, the next stage will involve taking forward the construction of the proposed 50-kennel facility.

Once operational, the centre will provide dedicated infrastructure for sterilisation, vaccination, treatment and care of stray dogs as part of the city’s animal birth control efforts.
