Ranchi, September 05, 2026: Jharkhand is likely to remain under unsettled weather conditions over the next several days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting thunderstorms and lightning from September 5 through September 10 and a heavy-rain warning for September 9.
The latest warning from the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi, suggests that the state’s weather will remain active rather than settling into a prolonged dry spell. Rain and thunderstorms are expected at different locations, with conditions varying across districts.
For Ranchi, the forecast indicates temperatures around the upper 20s to low 30s Celsius during the coming days. The district forecast issued on September 4 had projected a maximum of 28°C on September 5 and 6, rising to around 31°C in parts of the state depending on location.
September 9 stands out for heavy rain
While thunderstorms and lightning remain the broader concern, September 9 carries a specific heavy-rain warning for Jharkhand in the latest IMD bulletin. Thunderstorm and lightning activity is also forecast on that day.
The warning continues on September 10, when thunderstorms and lightning are again expected in the state.
Ranchi likely to see changing weather
The district forecast for Ranchi points to relatively cool conditions compared with several other parts of Jharkhand, with maximum temperatures forecast at 28°C on September 5, 6 and 7, before easing back to 27°C on September 8.
The pattern is not uniform across the state. East Singhbhum and Saraikela, for example, are forecast to see maximum temperatures rising to around 33°C by September 7, while Ranchi is expected to remain several degrees cooler.
Lightning remains the key safety concern
With the IMD continuing its thunderstorm and lightning warnings, residents should take precautions whenever thunderstorms develop.
People should avoid open areas and isolated trees during lightning activity and move to a safer enclosed location. Farmers, motorists and those working outdoors should pay particular attention to weather warnings before venturing out.
The IMD’s Ranchi centre has advised residents to use its MAUSAM app for location-specific forecasts and warnings and the DAMINI app for lightning alerts.

The latest forecast points to a continued spell of variable weather rather than an immediate withdrawal of monsoon activity. With thunderstorms forecast on several consecutive days and heavy rain specifically flagged for September 9, residents across Jharkhand will need to keep track of updated district-level warnings.
