Jamshedpur, September 4, 2026: Police have arrested the third accused in a chain-snatching case reported in Sonari and recovered the gold chain allegedly taken from a woman during the incident.
The accused, identified as 24-year-old Rohit Karmakar alias Sipul, had allegedly remained absconding after the July 31 incident. Police arrested him from the Birsanagar police station area following a tip-off.
The recovery of the chain was made based on information allegedly provided by Karmakar during questioning.
Two suspects had earlier been arrested
The case dates back to July 31, when 58-year-old Kadma resident Archana Srivastava reported the incident at Sonari police station.
According to her complaint, she was returning home from A Road, Sonari, at around 4:30 pm when two youths riding a Pulsar motorcycle allegedly snatched a gold chain from her neck near H Road and fled towards Kadma.
Their escape was interrupted when the motorcycle collided with a small commercial vehicle. The two riders fell onto the road but allegedly abandoned the motorcycle and escaped on foot.
Police investigation subsequently indicated that three people were allegedly involved. While two suspects allegedly carried out the snatching, the third person was suspected of keeping watch on the surrounding area and monitoring the movement of people and police.
Police had earlier arrested Pankaj Harpal and Rohit Murmu and sent them to judicial custody on August 6.
Gold chain recovered from Birsanagar residence
Karmakar allegedly remained on the run until police received information about his whereabouts.
Following his arrest, police questioned him regarding the incident. Based on his alleged disclosure, officers recovered the woman’s gold chain from his residence in Zone No. 6 of Birsanagar.
Police said Karmakar has previously faced several criminal cases, including cases related to chain snatching, robbery and other offences.
He has been sent to judicial custody, while further investigation into the case is continuing.
The allegations against the accused are subject to the legal process, and the arrest does not by itself establish guilt.
