Ranchi, September 07, 2026: Ranchi Municipal Corporation is preparing to conduct a fresh survey of street vendors across all 53 wards of the city, with the proposed exercise aimed at identifying genuine vendors and creating more organised spaces for their businesses.
The survey will document the number of street vendors, their existing locations and the type of businesses they operate. The exercise is being planned following directions from the Chief Minister.
Based on the number of vendors and their requirements in different parts of the city, the civic body plans to identify suitable government and municipal land for developing permanent vending zones and organised vendor markets.
The proposed system is intended to address two issues at the same time. For vendors, designated spaces could provide greater stability and reduce repeated displacement from their existing locations. For pedestrians and motorists, clearing footpaths of unauthorised occupation could improve movement and help ease congestion.
Focus on identifying genuine vendors
A key objective of the survey will be to establish an accurate database of street vendors operating in the city. The information collected will help the civic body assess how many vendors require designated spaces and where such markets would be most practical.
Instead of dealing with vendors only through periodic anti-encroachment drives, the proposed approach seeks to create designated areas where street businesses can operate in a more regulated manner.
The locations of future vending zones and markets will be assessed according to local requirements, vendor numbers and availability of suitable land.
The initiative could therefore reshape how street vending is managed across Ranchi, while also addressing the longstanding challenge of keeping footpaths accessible to pedestrians.
