Giridih, September 07, 2026: The final religious rituals following the death of Jharkhand minister and Giridih Sadar MLA Sudivya Kumar Sonu continued on Monday, with his son Shreyash performing the asthi visarjan in the Barakar River.
The ritual was carried out according to traditional customs and Vedic rites in the presence of family members, relatives, close associates and well-wishers. The atmosphere along the riverbank remained sombre as religious chants accompanied the ceremony.
Shreyash immersed his father’s ashes in the river as part of the traditional post-funeral rites. He became emotional while recalling memories of his father, leaving many of those present visibly moved.
Funeral held with state honours
Sudivya Kumar Sonu died suddenly on September 6, triggering an outpouring of grief in Giridih and across Jharkhand.
His last rites were performed in Giridih on Sunday with state honours, with a large number of people gathering to pay their final respects to the minister and legislator.
The Monday asthi visarjan marked another significant stage in the family’s traditional mourning rituals following the funeral.
Supporters and political associates also remembered Sonu for his political career and public service. They described him as a leader who remained connected with people and said his death had left a significant void in Giridih as well as in Jharkhand’s political landscape.
At the Barakar River, family members and well-wishers offered prayers for the departed leader’s soul as the final rites continued in a deeply emotional atmosphere.
