Ranchi, November 08, 2024: For over two months, 41 workers from Jharkhand have been stranded in Malaysia, facing dire conditions and pleading for repatriation. These laborers, employed under difficult circumstances, have reportedly not received wages for three months and are now seeking intervention from the Indian and Jharkhand governments to facilitate their safe return.
Workers Stranded Without Pay
The group, comprising individuals from Hazaribagh, Bokaro and Giridih districts, has revealed that their situation deteriorated significantly over the past months. According to their video messages, these workers were confined within their company’s premises for one and a half months before finding temporary refuge at the Indian Embassy in Malaysia. Despite assurances from embassy officials to secure their back pay and arrange for their return, tangible action remains pending.
Indian Embassy’s Response and Investigation
The Indian Embassy in Malaysia acknowledged the presence of these workers, noting that they had provided basic assistance during their stay. However, workers allege that substantial measures to expedite their repatriation have yet to materialize. Embassy representatives have stated that they are coordinating with local authorities and the employer to resolve the outstanding issues but did not commit to a timeline for their return.
Families’ Distress and Public Appeals
Back in Jharkhand, the families of the stranded laborers are growing increasingly anxious. Many have called upon the Indian government to expedite the process and ensure their loved ones’ safe repatriation. Advocate Sikandar Ali, known for his work with migrant laborers, has also raised his voice, urging immediate action from both the state and central governments. The prolonged separation and uncertain fate of these workers have added immense emotional and financial strain to their families.
