Pakur, December 10, 2024: The historic Shiva Sheetla Temple in Pakur witnessed a major theft late Monday night, leaving devotees shocked and local authorities scrambling for answers. Ornaments worth lakhs of rupees, including a silver crown, a gold nose ring, a silver trident and other valuable items, were stolen from the revered temple, raising serious concerns about security measures.
Devotees Discover Theft During Morning Prayers
The theft came to light on Tuesday morning when devotees arrived for their daily prayers and found the temple door lock broken. Upon inspection, they noticed that the ornaments adorning the idol of Goddess Shakambhari, including the silver crown and gold-plated trident, were missing. Other stolen items reportedly include ceremonial silver plates, a pair of silver sandals (charan paduka) and a silver peacock-shaped decorative piece.
The news of the theft spread quickly and a large crowd of devotees gathered at the temple, expressing their anger and grief over the incident.
Police Begin Investigation, FSL Team Involved
Local law enforcement, led by Pakur Nagar Police Station, arrived promptly at the scene and initiated an investigation. The forensic science laboratory (FSL) team was called to collect evidence from the site. Preliminary findings suggest the theft occurred during the early hours when the temple premises were unguarded.
“Initial reports confirm that several ornaments were stolen and we are thoroughly investigating the incident,” said Haridev Prasad, Officer-in-Charge of Pakur Nagar Police Station. “Security lapses, if any, will be scrutinized and necessary action will be taken against those found negligent.”
The police have also assured devotees that additional security measures will be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
Community Outrage Over Security Lapses
Devotees and community members have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the temple’s security arrangements. Many pointed out the proximity of a local police outpost and questioned how the theft could occur without detection.
Brijbhushan Mishra, the temple priest, stated, “The stolen items were donated by devotees over several years as part of their offerings to the Goddess. This incident has deeply hurt the sentiments of the faithful.”
Mishra also revealed that police have temporarily restricted entry to the temple premises to preserve the crime scene for forensic analysis.
Security Measures Under Review
In light of the incident, the local administration has ordered a review of security protocols at all religious sites in the district. Authorities are considering the installation of CCTV cameras and the deployment of security personnel at prominent temples, including Shiva Sheetla Temple.
District Superintendent of Police (SP) has assured devotees that a comprehensive investigation is underway. “We are leaving no stone unturned to apprehend the culprits. The community’s cooperation will be crucial in resolving this case swiftly,” the SP stated.
Impact on Devotees and Religious Sentiments
The theft at Shiva Sheetla Temple, a site of immense historical and cultural significance, has left devotees feeling betrayed and disheartened. The temple, known for its spiritual and architectural heritage, attracts thousands of visitors annually and such incidents threaten its sanctity and the sense of safety among devotees.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
Police have urged the public to report any suspicious activity or information that could assist in solving the case. Devotees and locals are hopeful that the stolen ornaments will be recovered soon and that justice will be served.
