Jamshedpur, December 10, 2024: Shopkeepers in Ward 20 of Adityapur Municipal Corporation area have taken to the streets, protesting against the corporation’s anti-encroachment drive. Men and women, accompanied by their children, have staged a massive demonstration, voicing their dissent from the roads to the Municipal Corporation office.
Encroachment Drive Sparks Protests in Adityapur
Five days ago, the Municipal Corporation carried out an encroachment removal operation from Sher-e-Punjab to Adityapur police station. While the drive aimed to clear the main road of traffic congestion caused by illegal encroachments, it has left hundreds of shopkeepers without a livelihood.
Shopkeepers, some of whom have been running their businesses for over four decades, argue that the sudden action has left them in a dire situation. The Municipal Corporation’s recent ultimatum, warning shopkeepers to vacate roadside premises, has further escalated tensions.
Vender Card Policy in Question
According to the shopkeepers, in 2021, the Municipal Corporation issued vendor cards to legalize their businesses. However, the corporation allegedly failed to implement or manage the policy effectively.
One shopkeeper lamented, “We were given vendor cards but never saw any active support from the authorities. Now, they are suddenly asking us to vacate, leaving us with no means to survive.”
Shopkeepers Demand Relief
Shopkeepers fear losing their sole source of income, which they depend on to support their families. Many expressed concerns about meeting basic needs such as food, medicine and their children’s education.
Women protesters carrying children joined the demonstration, emphasizing the devastating impact the eviction would have on their families. “Our shops are our lifeline,” one woman said, adding that the eviction would push them further into financial distress.
Appeals to the Government
Protesters also criticized the state government, accusing it of turning a blind eye to their plight. “During elections, candidates promise to stand with us in our struggles, but now no one is willing to listen,” said a shopkeeper.
They argued that shopkeepers contribute revenue to the government and are willing to pay regulated fees if necessary. “We have maintained a safe distance from the road and followed guidelines for decades. Why are we being targeted now?”
A Call for Immediate Action
The protesters have demanded that the Municipal Corporation halt its eviction operations and explore alternative solutions. They are urging authorities to reconsider their decision and work with shopkeepers to find a sustainable resolution.
The growing unrest highlights the challenges of balancing urban development with the livelihood of small businesses. As protests intensify, all eyes are on the Municipal Corporation and the state government to address the issue effectively.
