Jamshedpur, September 6, 2026: A woman allegedly attempted to set herself on fire outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Jamshedpur on Sunday evening, claiming that police had failed to take action in connection with her son’s death.
The woman, identified as Moni Kumari of Sonari, reportedly arrived near the DC office carrying a bottle of petrol. She allegedly poured the fuel over herself and then tried to light a match.
People present at the spot, along with an ATM security guard, intervened before she could set herself on fire. They took the petrol bottle and matchbox from her and tried to calm her down.
Woman alleges police inaction over son’s death
After the incident, Moni Kumari said her son Jai Yadav died by suicide on July 26, allegedly by hanging.
She claimed that her son had been in a long-term relationship with a woman identified as Simmi Rajak. According to Moni Kumari, her son was allegedly subjected to mental harassment by the woman and this contributed to his decision to die by suicide.
The allegations have not been independently established.
The woman further claimed that several calls from the woman were coming to her son’s mobile phone around the time of his death.
Seeks investigation and action
Moni Kumari alleged that she had repeatedly approached the police seeking action following her son’s death but had not received a satisfactory response.
She claimed that police had failed to seize and examine the mobile phone of the woman named in her complaint and alleged that authorities were favouring the other side. These are allegations made by the woman and have not been established as facts.
She said she had repeatedly been assured that action would be taken but was sent back without a concrete outcome.
Frustrated over what she described as police inaction, she went to the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Sunday and attempted self-immolation. The attempt was stopped by people nearby.
Moni Kumari has now sought a fair investigation from senior district officials and demanded action against those she believes were responsible for her son’s death. She also appealed for justice in the case.
