Ranchi, September 4, 2026: Political tensions over the ongoing student movement in Jharkhand have intensified, with the BJP giving the state government 48 hours to withdraw cases registered against protesting students.
BJP state president Aditya Sahu warned that the party would launch protests across all 24 districts if the government failed to act within the deadline. The announcement shifts the dispute from the student movement to a wider political confrontation between the BJP and the state government.
Sahu alleged that cases had been registered against more than 1,000 students who, according to him, were participating in peaceful demonstrations. He accused the government of attempting to intimidate students rather than addressing their concerns.
BJP says representation already made to Chief Secretary
The BJP state president said a party delegation had already met the state Chief Secretary and raised the demand for withdrawal of the cases.
With the government yet to respond to the party’s demand, the BJP has announced a four-day programme of demonstrations at district headquarters from September 8 to 11.
The party says the protests will focus on the cases against students and what it describes as the suppression of the student movement.
District-wise protest schedule announced
The BJP has planned demonstrations in different districts over four days:
- September 8: Ranchi, Dumka, Jamshedpur, Giridih and Garhwa
- September 9: Koderma, Sahibganj, Bokaro and Simdega
- September 10: Seraikela, Pakur, Dhanbad, Gumla, Latehar and Chatra
- September 11: Ramgarh, Deoghar, Lohardaga and Khunti
The party has made clear that it intends to take the issue to the district level if its demand is not addressed within the stipulated period.
The next 48 hours will therefore be significant in determining whether the state government responds to the BJP’s demand or the proposed district-wide protests go ahead as announced.
