Ranchi, August 17, 2026: Jharkhand is set for another spell of active monsoon weather, with widespread rainfall forecast across the state from August 17 to 19 and isolated heavy to very heavy rain likely during the period, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The latest IMD forecast issued on August 16 said a low-pressure area had formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and north Odisha. The system is expected to move nearly northwestwards and become more marked over the following 24 hours. Its influence is likely to increase rainfall activity over Jharkhand and neighbouring states.
Heavy rain likely in Jharkhand on August 17-18
The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Jharkhand between August 17 and 19. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in the state on August 17 and 18, with the possibility of very heavy rain at some locations during the same period.
The weather system is also likely to bring thunderstorms and lightning in parts of the region. The IMD’s broader forecast indicates that the combination of the low-pressure system and the monsoon trough will remain favourable for increased rainfall activity over eastern India.
The weather conditions could affect low-lying areas, particularly where heavy showers occur over a short period. Waterlogging and disruption to local road movement are possible in vulnerable locations.
Low-pressure system behind renewed rainfall activity
The current weather pattern is linked to a low-pressure area that developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-north Odisha coast on August 16.
The IMD said the system was likely to move nearly northwestwards and become more marked during the next 24 hours. The monsoon trough is also positioned in a way that is supporting rainfall activity over eastern and central parts of the country.
Jharkhand had already recorded heavy rainfall in the preceding period. In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on August 16, the IMD recorded 7 cm of rain at Gumla, while heavy rainfall was also reported over the state as a whole.
Rainfall may bring some relief from heat
The increase in cloud cover and rain is likely to moderate temperatures across several parts of Jharkhand. The supplied weather assessment indicates that maximum temperatures could fall by around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius during the next few days.
The rainfall may provide relief from humid conditions in Ranchi and other parts of the state. However, the risk associated with lightning and strong winds remains during thunderstorms.
Caution advised during thunderstorms
Residents should remain alert when thunderstorms develop, particularly in open areas. The IMD advises people to move to safer locations during lightning activity and avoid taking shelter under trees. Heavy rain can also lead to temporary waterlogging, reduced visibility and disruption to road traffic in affected areas.
With rainfall activity expected to remain elevated through August 19, local conditions may vary considerably between districts. Residents should follow the latest district-level weather warnings before travelling or undertaking outdoor activities.
