Khunti, November 17, 2024: In a dramatic turn of events, an attempted robbery at an SBI ATM in Bichna village, Khunti district, proved catastrophic for the perpetrators. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours between 3:00 and 4:00 AM, left the robbers empty-handed and 12 lakh rupees in cash reduced to ashes.
Gas Cutter Theft Attempt Ends in Flames
According to local police, a group of unidentified individuals attempted to break into the ATM using a gas cutter. However, during the process, the intense heat ignited a fire inside the machine. The flames quickly spread to the cash compartment, incinerating the currency stored within.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire and subsequent smoke activated the ATM’s alarm system. By the time authorities arrived at the scene, the robbers had already fled, leaving behind a damaged ATM and charred cash.
Police Investigation Underway
Murhu Police Station’s officers, led by senior officials, reached the site shortly after receiving reports of the incident. The police cordoned off the area and initiated an investigation to gather evidence. Preliminary findings suggest that the robbers underestimated the risk of using a gas cutter, which ultimately led to the ignition.
Chief Inspector Ravi Kumar stated, “The fire was most likely caused by the heat generated from the gas cutter. The robbers were unable to extinguish the flames in time and had to abandon their attempt.”
Residents Raise Concerns
The attempted robbery has left local residents in shock. Bichna village, known for its quiet atmosphere, has never witnessed such an incident before. Residents have called for better security measures, including surveillance cameras and increased police patrols, to prevent similar attempts in the future.
A local shopkeeper shared, “We were woken up by the sound of the alarm and saw smoke coming from the ATM. It’s worrying that something like this could happen in our community.”
Security Gaps Highlighted
This incident has raised questions regarding the security of ATMs in semi-urban and rural areas. While major city branches often have comprehensive security protocols, many ATMs in smaller regions lack surveillance systems and guard services. Financial experts believe that enhanced safety measures, including flame-retardant ATM designs and remote monitoring, could mitigate such risks.
Bank officials are currently assessing the damage and evaluating additional protective measures for their ATMs. In response to the incident, the SBI regional office issued a statement, emphasizing their commitment to strengthening security protocols across their ATM network.
Ongoing Efforts and Next Steps
Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend the suspects involved. The police are analyzing CCTV footage from nearby areas and interviewing potential witnesses to gather leads. Inspector Kumar added, “We are pursuing all possible angles to ensure those responsible are caught and brought to justice.”
Experts urge banks to adopt modern security measures, including biometric access, reinforced cash compartments and fire-suppression systems, to safeguard against similar occurrences. The incident in Khunti serves as a stark reminder of the evolving methods used by criminals and the need for continuous improvement in security infrastructure.
The investigation remains ongoing and authorities have assured the public that updates will be provided as new information emerges.
