Ranchi, September 24: Cases of eye infection, commonly known as conjunctivitis or “red eye,” are rising sharply in Ranchi, with hospitals reporting hundreds of patients every day. The infection is spreading rapidly across the city, particularly among schoolchildren and office-goers, creating disruptions in daily activities.
Conjunctivitis Cases Rising in Ranchi Hospitals
The ophthalmology departments of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Sadar Hospital are witnessing a surge in patients suffering from conjunctivitis. According to hospital data, Sadar Hospital is treating 100 to 120 patients daily, while RIMS reported 374 patients over just two days, out of which 67 were confirmed conjunctivitis cases.
Doctors have warned that the infection, though not life-threatening, is highly contagious and requires strict preventive measures.
Impact on Schools and Workplaces in Ranchi
The outbreak is beginning to affect both educational institutions and offices in Ranchi. Several children are unable to attend school, while employees in government and private offices are taking leave due to eye infections. With the rapid transmission rate, officials fear a further rise in absenteeism if preventive measures are not followed.
Doctors Warn About Spread of Eye Infection
Health experts have highlighted that conjunctivitis spreads faster during the monsoon and humid conditions. Dr. Rahul Prasad of RIMS stated that the primary causes of infection include rubbing eyes with dirty hands, using contaminated towels or handkerchiefs, and close contact in crowded areas.
Doctors have also urged residents to remain alert to symptoms such as eye redness, irritation, watery discharge, and swelling, and to seek immediate treatment if needed.
