Ranchi, September 24, 2025: In a significant policy move, the Jharkhand government has decided to free seven districts from dependence on the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for electricity supply. The state will establish its own power transmission network in these areas, with Jharkhand Urja Sancharan Nigam Limited (JUSNL) set to take full responsibility within the next three years.

Jharkhand Government’s Decision on Power Supply

Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who also holds the energy portfolio, has directed the state to become self-reliant in electricity transmission. Acting on this vision, JUSNL has prepared eight new transmission projects that have already received cabinet approval. Work on these projects is expected to begin shortly, paving the way for a modernized and independent electricity system in Jharkhand.

Seven Jharkhand Districts to Exit DVC Command Area

Currently, seven districts of Jharkhand, Deoghar, Dumka, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Dhanbad, and Bokaro fall under the DVC command area. These districts face a demand of nearly 1,200 MW of power, but DVC has been supplying only about 600 MW, leading to frequent outages. The outdated transmission system and old lines have further worsened the situation, causing recurring power cuts. With the new plan, the Jharkhand government will directly supply electricity to these districts through its own network.

Jharkhand Power Generation from Patratu Thermal Plant

The state has already started receiving 585 MW of electricity from the first unit of the Patratu Thermal Power Plant. Two additional units are expected to be operational within the next two years, enabling Jharkhand to meet up to 85% of its total electricity demand internally. This will significantly reduce reliance on external sources such as DVC and ensure more stable power supply across the state.

New Transmission Projects Approved in Jharkhand

The government has cleared several high-value power infrastructure projects to strengthen the state’s electricity network. Key projects include:

  • 132/33 KV Grid Substation at ITI More, Chas – ₹74.95 crore
  • Baliapur-Maithon 220 KV Transmission Line – ₹174 crore
  • Baliapur-Sindri 132 KV Line – ₹67.59 crore
  • Gas Insulated Substation in Dhanbad – ₹113 crore
  • LILO Transmission Line at Sindri – ₹77.66 crore
  • 220/132/33 KV Grid Substation with LILO Line in Maithon – ₹173 crore
  • 220/132/33 KV GIS Substation in Maithon – ₹172 crore
  • Maithon-Tundi 132 KV Transmission Line – ₹126 crore
  • 132/33 KV Grid Substation at Sindri (HURL) – ₹74.95 crore

These projects are expected to provide reliable transmission infrastructure and reduce power shortages across Jharkhand’s industrial and rural belts.

Jharkhand’s Path Toward Power Self-Reliance

With the implementation of these transmission projects and enhanced generation from Patratu, the state is set to reduce its dependence on external agencies like DVC. The initiative is expected to improve electricity availability in key districts, boost industrial growth, and provide relief to consumers struggling with frequent outages.
