Ranchi, August 26, 2026: Ranchi Police have arrested eight alleged members of an organised motorcycle theft gang and recovered 10 stolen motorcycles, following an investigation into vehicle thefts reported in Ranchi and neighbouring districts.
Those arrested include Bharat Baitha, Sunil Karmali, Rohit Oraon, Rohit Kumar Munda and Pradeep Oraon, along with others. Police said Bharat Baitha, identified as the alleged gang leader, has a previous criminal record involving 11 serious cases, including murder and theft.
The arrests followed a vehicle-checking operation near the Swarnarekha River bridge in Sithiyo under Dhurwa police station limits.
Three suspects tried to flee during vehicle checking

Police were conducting vehicle checks in the area when three people travelling on a motorcycle allegedly attempted to flee after noticing the police team.
With assistance from armed personnel, the police chased and detained the three suspects. The motorcycle they were riding was subsequently found to be stolen, according to police.
During questioning, the suspects allegedly disclosed the operation of an organised motorcycle theft network. Police said the group primarily targeted weekly markets in rural areas, where motorcycles were parked while people went about their business.
According to the investigation, the stolen motorcycles were given different number plates and subsequently sold at lower prices in rural areas.
The arrests have reportedly helped police trace several motorcycle theft cases in Ranchi and surrounding districts.
Team formed on SSP’s direction
A special police team was constituted on the direction of Ranchi SSP to investigate the motorcycle theft network.
The team was led by Hatia Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Niraj Kumar Jha and included the officers-in-charge of Dhurwa, Jagannathpur and Tatisilwai police stations, along with other police officers and personnel.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the full extent of the gang’s activities and identify links to other vehicle theft cases.
