Ranchi, August 18, 2026: Jharkhand is preparing a proposal for 400 electric buses across four major cities, with Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro each proposed to receive 100 buses under the Centre’s PM e-Bus Sewa scheme.

The proposal is aimed at strengthening public transport in the four urban centres. The state government plans to seek central funding for the buses, with the proposal to be forwarded to the Centre after obtaining approval from the state Finance Department.

The plan does not yet amount to an immediate rollout. The purchase and operation of the buses will proceed only after the proposal receives the necessary approvals.

100 buses proposed for each city

Under the proposed arrangement, each of the four cities would get 100 electric buses. The fleet could include different categories of buses, including standard, midi and mini buses, depending on operational requirements.

The proposed mix is intended to allow the public transport system to serve different routes and passenger demand across the cities.

Charging infrastructure to be developed

The state will also have to prepare the supporting infrastructure before the buses can be put into service.

Plans include establishing charging stations and developing the operational facilities required to run the electric fleet. Routes and other arrangements are expected to be planned according to passenger demand and the requirements of each city.

The government expects the proposed electric bus network to provide residents with a more convenient public transport option. A stronger public transport system could also reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease traffic pressure on urban roads.

For now, the proposal remains subject to financial and central government approval before procurement and operations can begin.
