Chaibasa, August 18, 2026: Continuous heavy rain in Chaibasa, the headquarters of West Singhbhum district, has disrupted normal life, with several low-lying areas experiencing severe waterlogging and flood-like conditions. Four members of a family were also rescued after a dilapidated mud house collapsed in Amla Tola.

The rainfall, which began on Monday, has affected residential areas, roads and several public premises across the town. The situation has been linked in the source material to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

Water enters homes in low-lying areas

Gandhi Tola and Gurudwara Road are among the areas facing significant waterlogging. Residents of Gandhi Tola reported knee-deep water since Monday evening, with water entering the courtyards and rooms of several houses.

In Upper Tungri, wastewater from a drain has spilled onto the road, affecting the area and disrupting water supply, according to the source.

Rainwater has also reached the premises of the Public Health Engineering Department, Jubilee Park, the main gate of the Kolhan DIG residence and the district fisheries office.

The rising water level in Jubilee Pond has led to an overflow-like situation, while the Shivling at Mahulsai was also reported to be submerged. Several motorcycles and cars parked along roads were reportedly left partly submerged in the accumulated water.

Four family members rescued after house collapse

A separate incident occurred in Amla Tola near JMP Chowk, where a dilapidated mud house collapsed amid the heavy rain.

Four members of the same family were inside the house when it came down. Local residents immediately began rescue efforts and managed to bring all four people out safely.

The prompt response prevented what could have been a more serious incident, according to the source.

Officials reach affected area, family shifted to shelter

After being informed about the collapse, SDO Sanjay Kumar, Circle Officer Upendra Kumar and Municipal Council Executive Officer Santoshi Murmu reached the spot with other officials on Tuesday morning.

The affected family, whose house was damaged in the incident, was shifted to a nearby dharamshala. Arrangements for food and drinking water were made there, while social worker Trishanu Rai also assisted the administrative team.

Administration maintains watch as rain continues

The weather department has forecast heavy rain over the next 24 hours, prompting the district administration to maintain monitoring of affected areas.

Officials have urged residents of low-lying areas and those living in dilapidated houses to exercise particular caution while the adverse weather continues.
