Chaibasa, August 26, 2026: Tata Steel’s Raw Materials Division brought together officials from the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), worker unions and vendor companies for a tripartite safety committee meeting in Ranchi on Wednesday, with discussions centred on improving safety standards and working conditions across its mining operations.
The meeting was held at Chanakya BNR Hotel and brought together representatives from Tata Steel’s West Bokaro, Jharia, OMQ and FAMD units. DGMS Director General Ujjwal Tah chaired the meeting.
Senior officials at the meeting included DGMS Central Zone Dhanbad Deputy Director General R.T. Mandekar, South Eastern Zone Ranchi Deputy Director General Shyam Sundar Prasad, Tata Steel Jharia Division General Manager Narendra Kumar Gupta, FAMD Executive-in-Charge Sushant Kumar Mishra, OMQ General Manager Debashish Jena, West Bokaro General Manager Mukesh Ranjan, Chief Safety India and South East Asia Neeraj Sinha and Chief Safety Raw Materials Agam Kumar.
Focus on mine safety and safer working practices
The meeting reviewed the action taken on recommendations made during previous tripartite safety committee meetings. Participants discussed ways to strengthen a zero-harm culture in mining operations and expand the use of new technologies for safer working practices.
The agenda also covered diversity, equity and inclusion, green mining and sustainability, along with safety, health and working conditions. The participants discussed implementation of the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Central Rules, 2026, as outlined during the meeting.
DGMS officials shared their observations, followed by inputs from union representatives and vendor partners. The discussions were aimed at identifying areas where safety practices could be improved through greater coordination among the stakeholders.
DGMS chief highlights women’s participation in mining
DGMS Director General Ujjwal Tah appreciated the participation of women in the mining sector and encouraged organisations to learn from one another and share effective practices.
The meeting also included a presentation on the proposed way forward by Sandeep Kumar.
The programme began with a safety briefing, followed by the national song, the DGMS theme song and ceremonial lamp lighting. A minute of silence was observed in memory of people who had lost their lives in industrial accidents.
Around 180 participants from Tata Steel, DGMS, unions and vendor companies attended the meeting.
The tripartite forum serves as a platform for the stakeholders to discuss workplace safety and ways to improve the working environment. Tata Steel reiterated that the safety and welfare of its employees remain a priority for the company.
The programme concluded with the national anthem.
