Latehar, August 28, 2026: On Raksha Bandhan, students of CM Excellence Girls School in Latehar took a different approach to road safety awareness by tying rakhis to two-wheeler riders caught riding without helmets and urging them to make road safety a priority.
The campaign, conducted on the direction of Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kumar, used the traditional bond between brothers and sisters to deliver a simple message: riders should not put their lives at risk through avoidable mistakes on the road.
The students told the riders that they wished for their long lives and safe return home, while asking them not to ride motorcycles without helmets.
Students combine Rakhi with road safety message
During the awareness drive, students stopped two-wheeler riders who were travelling without helmets and tied rakhis on their wrists.
Instead of reprimanding the riders, the students spoke to them about the consequences of careless driving. They explained that a moment of negligence can put a person’s life at risk and affect the entire family.
The students emphasised that wearing a helmet should not be viewed merely as compliance with a traffic rule, but as an important safety measure while travelling on a motorcycle.
Riders promise to follow safety rules
The emotional appeal appeared to make an impact on the riders participating in the campaign. According to the information provided, those who received the rakhis acknowledged their mistake and promised the students that they would not ride two-wheelers without helmets.
They also promised to use seat belts while driving cars.
Appeal against drunk driving and mobile use
The campaign also focused on other common road safety concerns. Drivers and riders were urged to:
- Avoid driving after consuming alcohol.
- Keep away from mobile phones while driving or riding.
- Control speed and prioritise reaching the destination safely over travelling fast.
- Wear helmets while riding two-wheelers and use seat belts while travelling in cars.
District Transport Officer Umesh Mandal, Deputy Superintendent of Police Pradeep Kumar and trainee DSP Ram Lakhan Barnwal were among the officials present during the programme.
The officials appreciated the students’ approach to road safety awareness, saying that communicating safety messages with empathy and personal concern can make them more effective.
