Ranchi, August 28, 2026: The Jharkhand Police Association’s Ranchi district unit has demanded the arrest of Dumri MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato and his supporters within five days in connection with a case registered at Barwadda police station in Dhanbad. The association has alleged that the MLA misbehaved with the station in-charge, issued threats and that his supporters were involved in damage inside the police station.
The association’s office-bearers made the demand during a press conference and warned that a stronger course of action would follow if the arrests were not made within the stipulated period.
Association cites alleged WhatsApp threat
According to a press release issued by Jharkhand Police Association, Ranchi district branch president Anand Raj Khalkho, Mahato allegedly contacted Barwadda police station in-charge Ravi Kumar through a WhatsApp call from his mobile number on the night of August 21.
The association alleged that the MLA used abusive and threatening language during the call. The alleged remarks included a warning that after a change in government, the officer would be traced wherever he was posted in Jharkhand and his job would be ruined, along with a threat of being taught a lesson while off duty.

Alleged misconduct and damage at police station
The association further alleged that Mahato reached Barwadda police station later that night along with his supporters.
According to the statement, the MLA allegedly again behaved improperly in the station in-charge’s office, while items placed on the table were scattered and the officer’s nameplate was damaged.
A case was subsequently registered at Barwadda police station under Case No. 146/26 dated August 22, 2026. The source material states that the FIR invokes Sections 221, 224, 132, 351(2), 352 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police association demands immediate action
The Jharkhand Police Association said it was concerned about what it described as repeated statements and videos against police personnel on social media and through the press.
The association argued that alleged use of abusive or inappropriate language against police personnel by an elected representative affects the dignity of uniformed personnel.
The Ranchi district unit has backed the central office’s demand for the arrest of the MLA and other accused within five days and called for the legal process to be completed promptly.
The allegations against Mahato and the other accused remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
