Latehar. September 07, 2026: A wild elephant died after allegedly coming into contact with an electric wire near Komar village in the Balumath police station area of Latehar district in the early hours of Monday.
The incident reportedly took place around 2 am on September 7, when a herd of wild elephants entered the village area. According to information received from local residents, one of the elephants came into contact with an electric wire reportedly placed around a field to protect crops.
The elephant died at the spot
Following the incident, the Forest Department reached the site and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials are also examining how the electric wire was installed and whether it was connected to the incident.
The action followed directions from DFO Pravesh Agrawal. A team of forest officials has been deployed at the site to assess the situation and collect relevant information.
Range Forest Officer Nand Kumar Mahto said the department had received information about the elephant’s death and that an investigation was underway. He added that a medical team was being constituted and preparations had begun for the elephant’s post-mortem examination.
Officials said the exact cause and circumstances of the death would be established after the post-mortem report is received.
The Forest Department’s investigation is expected to clarify whether the electric wire used for crop protection was responsible for the elephant’s death and whether further action is required.
