Chaibasa court sentences man to 20 years in minor abduction and rape case

Chaibasa, August 31, 2026: A special court in West Singhbhum has sentenced Akhilesh Singh to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case involving the abduction and rape of a minor girl. The court also imposed a total fine of ₹50,000.

The case was registered at Chakradharpur police station on January 24, 2020, after a complaint alleging that the minor had been lured and abducted. Police initially registered Case No. 08/2020 under Sections 363 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Court awards punishment under POCSO Act

Following the investigation, police arrested Singh and sent him to jail. Investigators subsequently submitted a chargesheet based on the evidence collected during the probe under Sections 363, 366A, 376(2)(n), 376(3) of the IPC and Sections 4/6 of the POCSO Act.

The case was heard as Special POCSO Case No. 19/2020. After completion of the trial, the court of the Additional Sessions Judge-II, West Singhbhum, Chaibasa, found Singh guilty and pronounced the sentence.

The punishment includes:

  • Section 6 of the POCSO Act: 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹30,000 fine.
  • Section 366 of the IPC: Seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹10,000 fine.
  • Section 363 of the IPC: Five years of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹10,000 fine.

The total fine imposed by the court is ₹50,000.

The conviction followed the evidence presented by the prosecution, including scientific evidence gathered during the police investigation. Chaibasa police described the outcome as a significant achievement in the case.
