Chaibasa, September 02, 2026: A joint team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested a 42-year-old man at Chakradharpur railway station in connection with an alleged mobile theft case and recovered three smartphones from his possession.

The operation was conducted at Chakradharpur station under the direction of the Divisional Security Commissioner and the Railway Police Superintendent, Jamshedpur. The team comprised personnel from the RPF Tata unit and Chakradharpur GRP.

The arrested suspect has been identified as Mohammad Nisar, a resident of Chaibasa.

Police link recovered phones to Tata-Ernakulam Express

During questioning, Nisar allegedly told the RPF that the recovered phones had been stolen from passengers travelling in the general coach of the Tata-Ernakulam Express (Train No. 18189).

According to the source, Nisar would travel from Chaibasa to Chakradharpur on a scooter and target crowded trains at the station. Police said he was also known to be involved in criminal activities for some time.

The three smartphones, belonging to different brands, were seized during the operation.

Phones handed over to Chakradharpur GRP

The operation was carried out under the leadership of RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Balbir Prasad.

After the phones were seized, Nisar was handed over to the Chakradharpur GRP police station for further legal proceedings. The GRP is now trying to trace the actual owners of the recovered smartphones so that they can be returned to them.

Police have registered a case and are also examining Nisar’s previous criminal record as part of the investigation.
