Koderma, September 7, 2026: A boiler tube leak at the Koderma Thermal Power Station (KTPS) has forced one of its two generating units to shut down, reducing the station’s current power generation to around 500 MW.

The development has raised concerns about electricity availability, as KTPS has two units with a capacity of 500 MW each and a combined installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Around 750 MW of the power generated by KTPS is allocated to the Jharkhand government.

With one unit currently out of operation, the station is operating at roughly half of its total capacity.

KTPS management rules out major local impact

KTPS Project Head Sanjay Kumar said power generation from one unit was stopped after the boiler tube leak was detected.

He said the second unit is continuing to generate electricity, with the station currently operating at around 50% of its capacity.

According to the project head, KTPS does not directly supply electricity to local consumers. Power generated at the station is supplied to the grid, from where it is distributed to different areas.

He said that if required, electricity can also be sourced from other generation points to meet consumer demand.

Local officials raise concerns over supply

Local electricity board officials, however, have expressed concern that the shutdown of one KTPS unit could affect power availability in the surrounding areas.

They said that depending on the power situation, electricity availability in Koderma town and nearby areas could come under pressure, with supply potentially remaining around 50% in certain circumstances.

Repair work underway

Technical work is currently underway to identify and rectify the problem in the affected unit.

The timeline for restoring the unit to full operation has not been specified. The restoration of the shut unit will be important for bringing KTPS generation back to its full installed capacity of 1,000 MW.
