Jamtara, December 17, 2024: Acting on confidential information, the district administration conducted a surprise raid at Rameshwaram Rice Mill in Bena, uncovering large-scale irregularities, including the illegal repackaging and suspected smuggling of government-subsidized rice. The administration sealed the facility and seized significant quantities of rice, with further action underway.
Surprise Raid Unveils Illegal Operations
Under the directives of Deputy Commissioner Kumud Sahay, a three-member team led by District Supply Officer Raj Shekhar raided the mill on Tuesday, accompanied by police forces. The team included Cooperative Officer Sujit Kumar Singh and Block Supply Officer Abishwar Murmu.
During the raid, officials discovered 32 quintals of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice stored in bags labeled “Republic of Bangladesh.” Additionally, a truck loaded with rice intended for illegal transport was seized on-site. Authorities suspect the mill was operating as part of a larger organized syndicate, repackaging government rice for unauthorized distribution.
FCI Rice Found in Bangladeshi Sacks
Investigations revealed that rice belonging to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) was being repackaged in Bangladeshi sacks, raising concerns of cross-border smuggling. Officials noted that the operations were conducted so discreetly that local residents were unaware of the ongoing activities.
District Supply Officer Raj Shekhar stated,
“The rice mill was functioning like an organized syndicate. FCI rice and PDS supplies were being illegally diverted, repackaged and likely smuggled to Bangladesh.”
District Administration’s Swift Action
The district administration acted promptly upon receiving intelligence about the misuse of government rice supplies. Deputy Commissioner Kumud Sahay emphasized the seriousness of the issue, directing surprise inspections of all rice mills and PDS shops across the district.
She stated,
“We received credible information regarding the black-marketing of PDS rice with the collusion of certain dealers. The administration will ensure strict action against those involved.”
Officials have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to government-subsidized goods to prevent further irregularities.

The administration confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to identify all parties involved in the illegal operation. Officials assured that no offender would be spared and stringent legal action will follow.
Public Urged to Assist in Preventing Black-Marketing
Deputy Commissioner Kumud Sahay appealed to the public, encouraging vigilance and cooperation. She emphasized that citizens’ reports play a critical role in identifying and curbing such illegal activities.
“We urge the public to immediately report any suspicious activities concerning PDS supplies or government rice. Such cooperation will help eliminate these malpractices.”
Future Inspections to Ensure Compliance
The district administration has planned surprise inspections of all rice mills and PDS shops in the coming weeks to ensure compliance and prevent further irregularities. Officials reiterated that strict measures would be enforced to maintain the integrity of the public distribution system.
