Chaibasa, August 31, 2026: Congress workers staged a protest at Shaheed Park Chowk in Chaibasa on Monday over the FIR registered against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, with the party also demanding legal action against BJP workers in Uttarakhand.
The demonstration was organised on the direction of Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh and led by West Singhbhum Mahila Congress district president Nitima Bari. Protesters raised slogans against the central government before burning an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Congress alleges political misuse of FIR
Bari alleged that the FIR against Rahul Gandhi was politically motivated and accused the central government of attempting to silence the opposition leader.
She said the law should be applied through an impartial justice system rather than for political retaliation. She also demanded that if BJP workers in Uttarakhand had violated the law, they should face FIRs and legal action through the same process.
District Congress spokesperson Trishanu Rai said the party would continue to raise issues concerning the Constitution, democracy and freedom of expression both on the streets and inside legislative institutions.
He described the protest as part of the party’s campaign to defend democratic rights and constitutional values.
